MILL CREEK BRIDGE



PROJECT OVERVIEW

The design of this bridge involves one of the first uses of the Inverted Tee Girders in the State of Iowa. Although they had been used in Nebraska prior to this project, it was on a limited basis. Because of vertical height constraints and the restrictions caused by the need to stage construction, while leaving the existing piers in place, the use of the Inverted Tee Girders allowed for more flexibility than would either a Continuous Concrete Slab Bridge or a Pretensioned Prestressed Concrete Beam Bridge. Although this bridge is being constructed over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, the use of the Inverted Tee Girder resulted in the elimination of the need for false work which should greatly ease construction. Bridge aesthetics played an important role in this structure with the use of ornamental railing and light pole bases.

The Design of this bridge is by HR Green Company. The bridge is expected to start construction in the Spring of 2000 and take 165 days to complete. The bridge has been successfully completed.
