Greenville Bridge Project

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This is a $206 million cable-stayed bridge that once completed will boast a 1,378-foot center-span, the longest cable-stayed span in the continental United States.

Span lengths for the cable stayed unit are 180 meters - 420 meters - 180 meters. The out to out width is 30.82 m and the bridge will carry 4 lanes of U. S. Highway 82.

The new bridge will be built approximately one-half mile downstream from the existing two-lane, 60-year-old structure, which is both narrow and a hazard to river navigation.

The entire construction process will be documented in an online photo album via a highly interactive, state-of-the-art Web cam, which is an Internet accessible camera.

HNTB will manage this project and were the designers of the Cable-Stayed Bridge. Neel-Schaffer working as a subconsultant designed the approaches.

The project is expected to take five years with bids expected June 26, 2001

The first project will construct the cable-stayed span at an estimated cost of $100 million. Three future projects will provide for the construction of the roadway and bridge approaches on each side of the river as well as for the removal of the existing bridge.

Funds for this new four-lane bridge were made available from both the federal and the state level. U.S. Highway 82 is a major part of the Mississippi Delta’s transportation network, and is designated as part of the National Highway System. It connects the Mississippi Delta to Interstate 55 and other four-lane highways like U.S. Highway 61 and U.S. Highway 65 in Arkansas. The existing bridge is considered a serious navigation hazard and a bottleneck for barge traffic on the Mississippi River.
